The purpose of this Act is to promote sanitary condition of the animals in Iceland and prevent them from new diseases abroad. The Minister of Agriculture can impose import restrictions on various import items such as hay, helm, soil, manure, meat and bone meal, blood, and blood plasma, unpasteurized milk, uncooked eggs, wool, animal hair, feathers, eiderdown, etc.

These measures are imposed according to the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures.
